Toronto-born artist Keiran Brennan Hinton observes domestic and interior spaces within his formally trained practice. Often painted en plein air, his figurative works offer contemplative reflections of intimacy and interiority. Although they are devoid of characters, the scenes exude human presence and personal history by giving attention to the details and objects that make up a home. Brennan Hilton received a MFA from the Yale School of Art, and has presented work in solo exhibitions at Charles Moffett Gallery, New York; Michael Gibson Gallery, London; and 1969 Gallery, New York; among others.

September Kitchen stems from a recent body of work, which portrays various vantage points within a century-old schoolhouse that the artist and his mother purchased in rural Ontario. Although the school closed in 1967, the building retained the majority of its historical character and untouched architectural details. Since adapted for residential living, it became an indefinite home for the artist during the onset of the pandemic, inspiring him to lay bare his private surroundings. The artist will hand embellish a select number of prints with colored pencils, to add subtle details such as flowers to the budding stems in the window, smoke, and little creatures inhabiting the kitchen scene.

Of this series, Brennan Hinton notes, “I believe in supporting NAMI because of their focus on helping those suffering from mental illness, along with providing resources and education to friends and family who are also impacted. I’ve personally witnessed the effects of mental illness on people in my life, who could have greatly benefited from the counselling, mentorship and support that NAMI provides.”
