Boston-based artist Anthony Peyton Young’s works—created through a hybrid practice of painting, drawing and collage—explore themes such as memorialization, ancestry and social justice. A meditation on the spaces and mechanisms that individuals use to cope with trauma, his creative process entails cutting images apart to carve away Blackness, both literally and figuratively. Heavily influenced by Black Americana, film and his home state of West Virginia, the artist received his MFA from The School of the Museum of Fine Arts at Tufts University, and has work in the collections of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston and the Clay Center of Arts and Science.

Candlelight Vigil depicts a nighttime scene wherein Young appears besides a genderless, ancestral figure who is intended to represent a lineage of his family. The duo walk side by side along the edges of Boston’s Charles River, a place that the artist often visits for solitude and relief. Multiple limbs surrealistically connect to each of their bodies, as a visual stand-in for departed family members who provide spiritual support. Within this limited edition series for ART FOR CHANGE, Young further accentuated various elements with hand-embellished elements on 10 prints.
