Aliza Nisenbaum

Aliza Nisenbaum’s paintings foreground various social groups that include immigrant communities, members of grassroots organizations, and workers from the healthcare and transportation sectors. The artist collaborates with her subjects through lengthy engagements, which give way to a deepened understanding of their individual and collective histories. This knowledge becomes the basis for portraits that render close observation and patient listening as political acts. Born in Mexico City and based in New York, Nisenbaum has presented solo and two-person exhibitions at the Barack Obama Presidential Center, Chicago, IL; Metropolitan Opera, New York, NY; Queens Museum, New York, NY; Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art, Kansas City, MO; and Tate Liverpool, United Kingdom; among many others. Her work is in the permanent collections of institutions that include the Art Institute of Chicago, IL; FLAG Art Foundation, New York, NY; Hirshhorn Museum, Washington, D.C.; Institute of Contemporary Art, Boston, MA; Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, NY; and Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, NY.
