Brooklyn-based artist Alessandro Teoldi (b. 1987, Milan, Italy) received his MFA from ICP-Bard College in 2013. His practice encompasses textiles, sculpture, drawing and installation exploring themes of intimacy, connection queerness, and desire. Recent solo exhibitions include Capsule, Shanghai, CN; Galleria Acapella, Naples, Italy; 11R, NY; and Baxter St at The Camera Club of New York, NY.

Untitled (Philippine Airlines, Avianca and Delta) was originally sewn from aircraft blankets the artist has collected over the last few years. Whether taken off the plane or gifted to him by friends and family,  the synthetic blankets become statuesque objects, woven into shameful gestures and lovingly stitched into new portraits or figures. By collaging the blankets together, the artist reassigns the meaning of the material—recontextualizing the relationships within a new conceptual frame. Both a narrative construction process and act of resourcefulness, Teoldi’s careful consideration of the material’s history engages both a universal and intimate past, mass production and the intimacies that bleed down through the objects. The artist has hand embroidered each eye with the same thread used in the original tapestries, making each piece a unique work.
