Guided by intuition, his work focuses on the intersection of personal memory, intimacy, and the human condition. In 2024, Mallozzi was one of fifteen artists in South Florida to receive the Cultural Consortium Grant, a prize presented by an alliance of the Broward, Martin, Miami-Dade, Monroe, and Palm Beach counties’ art councils; in the same year, his work was additionally acquired into the city of Miami’s public art collection. Born in New York, the artist received his BFA from the Rhode Island School of Design, and has presented work at galleries that include Hal Bromm Gallery, New York, NY; Bill Arning Exhibitions, Miami, FL; Hashimoto Contemporary, Los Angeles, CA; and Freight + Volume, New York, NY.

Titled after a song by the musician Julio Iglesias, Que no se rompa la noche recalls the music that once formed a backdrop to the Mallozzi family’s domino and poker game nights. The artist traces the changing, personal significance of Spanish music from the 1980s and 1990s, which was first associated with childhood joy, then fraught with anxiety and anger, and finally deemed celebratory again as an adult. Featuring two male figures locked in a tender embrace, the work commemorates the gradual transformation experienced by Mallozzi’s mother—from visceral rejection of her son’s queerness, to eventual love and acceptance. The artist notes, “My work draws from personal memory: the feeling of being sexually free before my HIV diagnosis, the double-edged weight of intimacy that is simultaneously hot and dangerous, and the reverence and jealousy experienced as I watch others move through the world with a freedom that I miss. I also explore the family biases, religious beliefs, and cultural customs that complicated my coming out.” For this limited edition series, the artist will use pastels and Flashe paint to add unique elements to eight prints.

Jean-Paul Mallozzi
Que no se rompa la noche, 2026
16 x 11 ½ inches
Archival pigment print
Limited edition of 8
$850

Limited edition of 10 with 6 AP + 2 PP
Signed and numbered by the artist
$400

Of ART FOR CHANGE’s initiative to support the Ali Forney Center, Mallozzi adds, “When my parents found out I was gay, they were angry and hurtful for years. Yet I know that I was luckier than many; I always had a roof over my head. The Ali Forney Center exists for the young LGBTQ+ people who were forced onto the streets with no support, no safety, and no resources.
