Growing up along the border between the United States and Mexico, the artist witnessed the harsh realities of migration beginning at an early age. In an effort to cope with the bleak nature of migrants’ grueling journeys, he turned to his imagination, reshaping reality by transforming the landscapes of Southern and Baja California into dreamlike domains protected by anthropomorphic flora. Based in Los Angeles, Gibson has presented work at the Palm Springs Art Museum, Palm Springs, CA; K11 MUSEA, Hong Kong, China; the Institute of Contemporary Art, Miami, FL; and the Institute of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, CA. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003e\u003cspan\u003ePart of an ongoing series,\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003e Light a Candle to the Big Sky\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003e draws inspiration from the makeshift altars and shrines left behind in caves and other hidden areas where migrants stop to rest, regroup, and pray for a safe journey. Within the composition, vibrantly hued flowers populate a landscape of layered hillsides, while a sun rises above parting clouds. A regular volunteer with non-profit organizations Border Kindness and Borderlands Relief Collective, Gibson notes, \"In my art practice, I am always trying to find comfort in the world and a safe place for my mind to wander. My goal is to dive inside myself, pull out a feeling or memory, and place it on a surface like puzzle pieces.
