The artist collaborates with her subjects through lengthy engagements, which give way to a deepened understanding of their individual and collective histories. This knowledge becomes the basis for portraits that render close observation and patient listening as political acts. Born in Mexico City and based in New York, Nisenbaum has presented solo and two-person exhibitions at the Barack Obama Presidential Center, Chicago, IL; Metropolitan Opera, New York, NY; Queens Museum, New York, NY; Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art, Kansas City, MO; and Tate Liverpool, United Kingdom; among many others. The painting provides a close-up view of a subject who gazes forward while lying atop and beneath colorful bedding. Striations of vivid colors streak across the woman’s face—in marked contrast to both her pensive stare, while echoing the graphic patterns of the blanket and sheets that envelope her. Though invented, these textiles are inspired by materials that Nisenbaum sourced during a trip to Merida in Yucatán, Mexico. In creating this composition, the artist also considered Henri Matisse’s painting \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003eWoman before an Aquarium \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003e(1921-1923), which hones in a female character’s state of contemplation.
