Carlos Rodriguez, Garras Protectoras, 2021; Signed and Numbered Limited Edition Print
Carlos Rodriguez’s practice—spanning paintings, drawings and ceramics—explores the male body, issues of gender and identity, and sexual desire as a creative impulse. The Mexico City-based artist is inspired by classical painting and primitive art, and feels a special connection with self-taught artists such as Henri Rousseau and Hector Hyppolite. Populated with references to mythology, science, poetry and themes related to body positivity, his playful works often depict scenes of men engaged in various games and fantasies.
The second of Rodriguez’s collaborations with ART FOR CHANGE, Garras Protectoras, represents the instincts of protection and companionship. Within the work, a bear’s body provides a cave-like shelter to a male character, alluding to early Paleolithic cultures wherein mankind worshipped animals as magical spirits. The duo eschew violence and conflict, and surrender their defenses in a harmonious embrace.
Of this series, Rodriguez notes, “I strongly believe in helping each other, especially in these times. If you are in the position to genuinely help others, or if you can generate actions that benefit your community and inspire others, go ahead. It is vital.”
Of the total net proceeds from sales of this print, 20% will benefit City Harvest and, as with all AFC initiatives, the artist receives 50%.
